What To Expect After a Tummy Tuck
Preparing for tummy tuck recovery is just as important as preparing for the procedure itself. The way the body heals during recovery will largely depend on the patient’s ability to follow aftercare instructions. Additionally, tummy tuck results will be impacted by the patient’s recovery, so it is crucial to properly prepare for the healing period to allow for a successful recovery. This blog discusses tummy tuck recovery week by week so patients can get a clear idea of what to expect after their surgery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery
Tummy tuck surgery is known for creating stunning abdominal contours, eliminating stubborn fat and excess skin, and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. Many patients look forward to finally having a smooth, flat stomach and confidently showing off their abdomen in bathing suits and tight-fitting clothing. Yet before debuting a slimmer waist, patients will have to undergo the tummy tuck recovery process.
How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Tummy Tuck?
Every patient’s body is unique and will handle tummy tuck recovery in their own way. That being said, many patients have a recovery period of six to eight weeks. During this recovery period, it is essential to rest and refrain from strenuous physical activity to avoid straining incisions and pushing the body too fast, too soon.
A general outline of tummy tuck recovery week by week may look like the following timeline:
Week One
Patients typically experience the most discomfort during the first few days of recovery. This discomfort can be managed with pain medications.
Every tummy tuck patient should have someone drive them home from their surgery and stay with them for at least the first few days to help them with everyday necessities. Patients will be instructed to sleep on their backs on a wedge pillow, a stack of pillows, or a recliner chair to give their torsos an elevated position and help reduce fluid buildup.
Mobility will be limited during this time since patients cannot stand up fully straight due to the abdominal muscle repair. However, it is still important to do short daily walks to promote blood circulation.
By the end of the first week, the patient will have their first follow-up appointment with Dr. Knowling, and surgical drains will be removed.
Week Two
At this point, many patients can stand up a bit straighter but will still need to be slightly bent over while standing and walking to protect the healing muscles. Patients with office jobs or similar work that does not involve strenuous physical labor may return to work.
Weeks Three Through Five
Many patients are cleared to add more physical activities back into their routines, such as low-impact exercises. At this time, patients can stand up straight and sleep flat on their backs.
Swelling and bruising will significantly subside around this time, allowing patients to begin to see their results.
Weeks Six Through Eight
Patients will typically feel back to themselves around six to eight weeks after tummy tuck surgery. Most patients will be cleared for all their daily activities.
The majority of the swelling will subside, allowing patients to see most of their defined stomach contours. However, some swelling may continue to persist for the next few months. Once the swelling fully diminishes, patients will be able to see their final tummy tuck results.
